The bridge between Fulham and Putney was completed in 1729

According to old folk law, in the early seventeen hundreds Sir Robert Walpole was in a hurry following a meeting with George I. At the time he was travelling with his servant on route to the House of Commons. They arrived at the ferry boat but the ferry was on the other side of the river. The waterman who apparently was drinking in the Swan heard the yells but decided to ignore Sir Robert. Sir Robert Walpole made a promise that day a bridge would be built to replace the ferry.
