Did you know.... Croydon, Shirley and Addington

Addington Palace is on the outskirt of Croydon town centre very close to Shirley. It's now surrounded by beautiful scenery and public and private golf courses. Between the years of 1807 and 1898 the palace was resident to 6 Archbishops when eventually the building was sold. During the 1780's Brighton became a very fashionable town, Croydon became a halt for Stage Coaches on the south of London road. During the second worldwar, most of Croydon was sadly destroyed by Geman bombs and rockets. Soon after 1950 Croydon became a very congested town, the council thought best to introduce a large redvelopment scheme. Throughout the late 1950's and early 1960's the town experienced new roads such as the underpass, fly over and the building of new office blocks together with multi storey car parks. Now in modern times Croydon is an excellent place to shop, most of the large UK retailers have premises in the centre. This is all thanks to the Whitgift Centre which was built in 1969.
