Brixton History Facts

Brixton the name is said to believed to spring from Brixistance, meaning the stone of Brixi, a Saxon lord. Brixi is assumed to have erected a boundary stone to mark the meeting place of the traditional hundred court of Surrey. The location is not known but is believed to be at the very top of Brixton Hill, at a road known at the time as Bristow or Brixton Causeway, long before any settlement in the area. Brixton marks the increase from the marshes of North Lambeth up to the hills of Higher Norwood and Streatham.

Stream Effra flowed from its source in Higher Norwood thru Herne Hill to Brixton. At Brixton the brook was crossed by low bridges for Roman roads to the southern coast of Britain, now Brixton Road and Clapham Road. The primary roads were connected thru a web of medieval country lanes, like Acre Lane, Coldharbour Lane, Brixton Water Lane and Lyham Road, officially Black Lane.

With the opening of Vauxhall Bridge in the early 1800's improved access to Central London led on to a technique of suburban development. For sure, the largest single development, and one of the last in suburban character, was Angell City , laid out in the 1850s on the easterly side of Brixton Road. Named accordingly after a family which owned land in Lambeth from the late 17th century till well into the 20th.
